As Told by Creator - Norma Krishna

“Pouch was created out of a need that I and so many others had. I would place my dog Puffy in my Beach Cruisers’ basket and head out on my bike  to run small errands. Ridding with Puffy was a way for me lower my carbon footprint by get him outside for longer, more then his usual 15-20 minute walk, and it provided an alternative way for me to get some exercise. I created Pouch because I used to put bulky towels on the bottom of the bike basket to pad Puffy’s ride, but I quickly realized there was no room for my dog, wallet, keys, phone and bag. Pouch lined the basket for Puffy’s comfort. I soon added pockets to place my small items like my wallet, keys, and phone. Shortly there after sprung another idea. How great would Pouch be if I could use it as a bag too? I no longer had to carry another bag or backpack.

Pouch became very useful. When I wasn’t riding around with Puffy, I used Pouch as reusable bag for the market, for toting around lunch and other goodies for afternoons at the park or beach. After riding around a couple times with my first prototype of Pouch, people started asking me about it. Where did I get it? Could I make them a Pouch?

I began to think, people want products that they can use while they are lowering their carbon footprint, connecting with their Pets and getting exercise. That’s when I realized that Pouch is more than a product, it can be socially responsible too. Continuing on with this social and eco-promise I searched for the best eco-friendly fabrics, and have maintained that Pouch is sewn sweatshop free. My hope is that you enjoy Pouch as much as Puffy and I have. You never know maybe I’ll see you cruising around the beach.” – Norma Krishna

About Pouch Eco-Fabrics

Pouch is committed to working with companies who are committed to the same labor and eco-ethics as we are. Our fabric supplier has been committed throughout years, to consciously choosing natural resources that are good for our environment and selecting labor practices that do not violate human rights.

More on the Eco-Fabrics Pouch is made of...

Hemp Fiber

We are learning so much about Hemp fibers now a days. One of the most valuable parts of the hemp plant is the fiber. Only Cannabis sativa is considered "true hemp." Characteristics of hemp fiber are: superior strength and durability, and its stunning resistance to mold. So you can leave your Pouch outside and wash it too. Hemp fiber contains a low amount of lignin, the organic glue that binds plant cells, which allows for environmentally friendly bleaching without the use of chlorine. In composite form, hemp is twice as strong as wood. Also all products made with hemp fiber are biodegradable. In addition to hemp, other eco-friendly fabrics consumers can choose from are organic and color-grown cotton, cruelty-free wool and lyocell fabrics.

Organic Cotton Fiber Vs. Conventionally Grown

Conventionally grown fibers are doused with synthetic chemicals to promote growth and deter pests, organic fibers are grown without them. We are learning that organic cotton fabrics are perfect for comfortable quilts, pet beds, diapers and so much more. That is why Pouch uses a 100% Organic Cotton Sherpa the pad that is placed at the bottom of the basket to comfort your Pet’s ride.

Lyocell

Lyocell was originally marketed as a type of Rayon. Lyocell is produced from wood pulp cellulose. Lyocell shares many properties with other cellulosic fibers such as cotton, linen, ramie and rayon. In addition to it’s eco-friendly manufacturing techniques, some main characteristics of lyocell fibers are that is a natural fabric, and is noted for being durable, strong wet or dry, soft, absorbent, and resistant to wrinkles.

Cruelty Free Wool

Wool is a natural renewable resource. Unlike many furs obtained from animals wool is the one of the only animal fibers that does not involve slaughter. Wool is known for it’s characteristics of being: warm, strong, durable, and ideal for cooler climates.

Dyed vs. Natural

When it comes to dying fabric most dyes on the market are not natural. It’s very difficult to create lasting quality with natural dye so Pouch try’s to balance between eco-friendly and socially conscious. Pouch is available in a dye free Natural style: (Cabo – 100% Natural Hemp Canvas).

Handmade, Pouch is a huge advocate for Sweatshop free labor. Pouch contracts out small independently owned sewing companies in the United States to sew Pouch.

What is a Sweatshop?

Did you know that sweatshop’s fail to comply with minimum wage laws? Sweatshops are just not a problem in foreign countries, wages in some U.S. sweatshops are estimated to be 60 cents per hour. Another problem is that some factories use child labor to increase their profits. In Indonesia some sweatshops pay 12-year-old girls to make shoes 70 hours per week in a factory that reeks of glue. Over 200 million children work in factories in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Asia.

The labor violations in sweatshops are:

factories are not ventilated
employees are abused
there are no toilets
there are no emergency exits
doors/exits are locked
there is do not have running water
companies violate minimum wage laws
child labor is involved
